Finance dictionary / Principal

Principal

The amount you borrowed, or still owe, not counting interest.

Principal is the original amount of a loan, and later the part of the balance that is still borrowed money rather than interest or fees.

Payments go to interest first and then to principal. Paying extra toward principal lowers the balance that interest is charged on.
