Inflation
The general rise in prices over time, which means a dollar buys less.
Inflation is the rate at which prices rise across the economy. In the US, it's most often measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
If prices rise 3% in a year and your pay doesn't, your money buys about 3% less. It's a reason to review your budget regularly and to keep savings somewhere that earns interest.
